Upper Peninsula, Michigan - Gabbro Falls, Lake of the Clouds and Presque Isle

And just like that, 7.5 months after starting our full-time travel adventure, we arrived in Michigan! Brian's home state! We always wanted to explore the Upper Peninsula, and as we crossed the Wisconsin-Michigan border, we were so excited to start!

Our first Michigan camp site was at the Bond Falls East Campground. What a beautiful spot! We arrived in time to set up and see the sunset. There are a total of 48 camp sites available between the East and West campgrounds at Bond Falls. It is on a first-come, first-served basis with the requirement of a permit. The permit is free of charge and may be obtained at the self-registration booth or from the camp host who will come by the camp sites to obtain your information and length of stay.

The Bond Falls State Park is nearby. We were not able to visit as a Michigan DNR Parks sticker is required. At $36.00 for an annual ticket, it didn't make sense to pay the $10.00 daily fee to see the falls. We will just have to make a return trip to Bond Falls when we have our sticker.

After a pleasant stay there, we continued on to Wakefield where we picked up a pastie on our way to see Gabbro Falls. Using our Google My Maps and Gaia app, we were able to find the trailhead to the falls. Located near the Blackjack Ski Resort, the short trail through the trees ends at a clearing revealing this amazing waterfall! There were several vantage points to choose from, and of course, we had to see them all.

We next checked into our campsite at the Presque Isle Campground, and set-up for the night before the forecasted rain began to fall. We awoke to find that we were now caught in a what we did not expect to be a long rainstorm, but we were grateful to have had it eventually clear to be able to continue on our adventure of seeing the Presque Isle River and waterfalls.
